Electroreception in Platypuses

Electroreception is the ability to recognise electrical sources and is used by platypuses when they hunt. Platypuses have thousands of mechanoreceptors and electroreceptors found in their bill. This lets platypuses rely on electroreception, not their sight, to hunt. This attribute is extremely helpful when platypuses are hunting in dark and merky rivers. Platypuses live in rivers most of which do not have clear waters. This means that electroreception is necessary for platypuses to navigate their habitat safely and efficiently. The range of platypus electroreception is explained in the image to the right. Overall, this attribute is extremely helpful for hunting and navigating murky waters.
